Severn Trent is set to recruit 440 new employees as it embarks on one of the UK’s most significant water infrastructure projects in over a decade. The £415 million initiative, part of the company’s multibillion-pound investment programme, will involve installing 870 miles of modern water pipes across the region by 2030.

Jobs to Support Future Water Supply

The recruitment drive, starting this month, will establish a dedicated team to replace ageing pipes with modern materials designed to last up to 100 years. These upgrades aim to reduce leaks, improve water quality, and ensure a more reliable supply for millions of customers.

Liv Garfield, CEO of Severn Trent, said: "This is a hugely ambitious project – one of the largest of its kind in decades. We are pleased to be providing a massive boost to jobs, as well as laying miles of new water pipes across the region which will allow customers to enjoy the best water quality for years to come.

“Upgrading our pipes isn’t just about making improvements today; it’s about creating a more secure water future and investing in our communities for generations to come.”

Key Benefits of the Project

The programme promises wide-ranging benefits for both customers and communities, including:

  • Leak Reduction: Aiming to cut water leaks by 16% by 2030 and 50% by 2045.
  • Cost Savings: Preventing costly repairs by modernising infrastructure now.
  • Smart Meters: Customers in upgraded areas will receive smart water meters to help monitor usage and save on bills.
  • Improved Reliability: A modernised system will mean fewer supply interruptions.

Regional Investments and Job Creation

The project will see significant investments across the Severn Trent region, including £60 million for Leicestershire, where 135 miles of new pipes will be installed, creating 49 jobs.

Long-Term Commitment

This major project is part of Severn Trent’s £12 billion investment programme, which has been rated ‘outstanding’ by Ofwat. The initiative aims to improve river health, secure water supplies, and keep bills affordable for customers.
