BAE Systems has announced plans to open a £25 million artillery factory in Sheffield, bringing 50 skilled jobs to the city. The facility will manufacture titanium components for the M777 towed howitzer, a lightweight artillery system used by several nations, including those supporting Ukraine in its ongoing conflict with Russia.
The new site, located in the north-east of Sheffield, is set to open next year. BAE Systems’ investment is part of its strategy to expand the UK's defence manufacturing capabilities and meet rising international demand for advanced artillery systems.
John Borton, managing director of BAE Systems’ Weapons Systems UK, described artillery manufacturing as a “critical, specialised industrial capability.” He emphasised the importance of developing a highly skilled workforce, stating: "This significant investment will help us develop a highly-skilled and adaptable workforce as an important part of the national defence infrastructure."
Roles at the new facility will span manufacturing, engineering, and technical disciplines, offering long-term opportunities in a sector essential to national and global security.
Supporting Ukraine and Global Demand
The Sheffield factory follows a deal BAE secured with the US Army in January and aims to supply additional customers, including other nations that have donated M777 systems to Ukraine. The M777 is prized for its lightweight design and rapid reaction capability.
BAE Systems highlighted the howitzer’s importance: "At half the weight of other 155mm towed howitzers, the M777 provides a rapid reaction capability and a proven pedigree that delivers decisive firepower when needed most in sustained combat conditions."
Countries such as the US, Canada, and Australia have already contributed M777 systems to Ukraine’s efforts against Russian forces.
Wider Investment in UK Defence
BAE Systems is also investing £200 million to upgrade its UK munitions business, ensuring it can meet increased demand for defence products.
The move to Sheffield aligns with a broader push to bolster domestic defence production. Sheffield Forgemasters, another local company, has recently resumed manufacturing artillery barrels after a 20-year hiatus, using its expertise to support the supply of tanks and artillery to Ukraine.
Political and Community Support
Clive Betts, MP for Sheffield South East, welcomed BAE’s investment, stating: "Sheffield is well known for its strong history of world-class engineering and advanced manufacturing. BAE Systems’ investment in a new artillery facility and highly skilled jobs will ensure the city continues to play a key role in delivering both economic prosperity and national security."
A Key Employer in the UK
BAE Systems is one of the UK’s largest manufacturers, employing over 90,000 people globally. The new Sheffield factory underscores the company’s commitment to maintaining the UK’s leadership in advanced defence manufacturing while offering job seekers the chance to join a growing industry with long-term opportunities.
