Efforts to expand the electrification of the Midland Mainline railway through the East Midlands could create over 4,000 jobs, according to regional leaders, MPs, and business advocates who are pressing the Government to act. The expanded electrification project, which connects London with the East Midlands and South Yorkshire, promises skilled job creation, improved transport efficiency, and environmental benefits.

Job Creation Opportunities Across East Midlands

If the electrification is extended northwards through Derby, Nottingham, Leicester, Chesterfield, and Sheffield, it is projected to generate around 4,300 skilled jobs and more than 100 apprenticeships. Transport for East Midlands (TfEM) estimates the initiative could inject an additional £61 million into the regional economy through job creation and nearly £18 million in social value.

Sir Peter Soulsby, chair of TfEM, stated, "After the cancellation of the eastern leg of HS2, it’s vital that the East Midlands’ existing rail infrastructure is improved and upgraded to support rising passenger demand and the need for economic growth. One of the critical components of getting electrification done cost-effectively is to ensure we’ve got a workforce that has the skills and capacity to deliver.”

Skilled Rail Workforce Retention and Development

TfEM and industry leaders suggest that the electrification project offers an opportunity to build on the expertise of firms and skilled workers already involved in southern electrification efforts. Derby-based Overhead Line Engineering (OLE), an electrification design specialist, has noted delays have impacted the availability of skilled workers. Keith Orgill, owner-director of OLE, shared that "the delay to the next stage has created a hiatus in design work... if Government commits now, we can recruit, train, prepare and deliver cost-effectively."

Political and Business Support for Economic Growth

Regional leaders and MPs, including East Midlands Mayor Claire Ward and Derby North MP Catherine Atkinson, advocate for the project’s potential to drive growth and employment. Mayor Ward stated, "The jobs that electrification will create are vital to the region achieving its growth ambitions. This is a chance for the government to power up our economy, attract new businesses, and ensure a greener, more efficient transport network for generations to come."

The East Midlands Chamber of Commerce and East Midlands Freeport are also urging Government commitment to ensure the region's infrastructure supports growth. Tom Newman-Taylor, CEO of East Midlands Freeport, noted that "the Midland Mainline runs directly alongside our Ratcliffe-on-Soar Power Station investment site... If we are to unlock the region’s full potential, then we need to see investment in both upgraded rail and road infrastructure."

The push for Midland Mainline electrification highlights a key opportunity for economic and employment development in the East Midlands, with substantial benefits for the workforce, local businesses, and the broader community.
