Rolls-Royce Submarines has created 120 new jobs with the opening of a specialist office at Glasgow's Airport Business Park. The facility aims to tap into the region's skilled workforce, focusing on roles in electrical controls, instrumentation, and cyber security.
The new Glasgow office will contribute to the UK’s nuclear deterrent efforts, including the Dreadnought submarine programme and the AUKUS security pact between Australia, the UK, and the US. Rolls-Royce Submarines, which already employs more than 5,000 people across the UK, continues to design and deliver pressurised water reactors for the Royal Navy’s fleet.
Maria Eagle MP, Minister for Defence Procurement and Industry, said the opening of the office is "a clear demonstration of the government's commitment to the UK's nuclear deterrent." She added that the investment "will support high-skilled jobs and economic growth that will benefit our prosperity and security for decades to come."
Expanding Expertise Across the UK
Rolls-Royce is known for its contributions to major defence projects, including the Astute and Dreadnought programmes, and provides frontline support for reactor plants from its Operations Centre in Derby. The Glasgow site enables the company to access a wider talent pool and enhance its capabilities in key areas.
Steve Carlier, President of Rolls-Royce Submarines, said the new office will help the company "harness talent from across the UK, not just from our base in Derby." He explained, "The opening of our Glasgow office allows us to benefit from the region's strong pedigree in electrical engineering and add to our own existing pool of nuclear experts."
Opportunities for Job Seekers
The new roles are part of Rolls-Royce’s broader expansion strategy, supporting the Royal Navy’s fleet and contributing to national security efforts. For job seekers, the Glasgow office represents a chance to join a high-impact industry with a strong focus on innovation and national defence.
Carlier emphasised that "powering and supporting the Royal Navy's fleet of nuclear submarines is a national endeavour" and said the company is "excited to secure new jobs in Glasgow, showcasing the far-reaching, positive impact of the submarines programme."
With its strategic investment, Rolls-Royce Submarines continues to cement its role as a key player in the UK’s defence sector while offering significant opportunities for skilled professionals in Scotland.
