The John Lewis Partnership (JLP) has announced plans to hire 12,500 temporary staff to support its operations over the busy holiday season, marking a notable increase of 4,100 roles compared to last year. The recruitment drive, spanning John Lewis department stores and Waitrose supermarkets, is intended to help the retailer manage the high demand anticipated around Black Friday, Christmas, and the New Year.
Recruitment is well underway for 2,000 roles at 34 John Lewis locations, with hiring for 7,700 positions at over 300 Waitrose sites set to begin soon. An additional 2,800 vacancies for warehouse staff and drivers will support increased online shopping demand, highlighting JLP’s focus on ensuring a seamless experience for customers during the peak shopping season.
Focus on Customer Experience
Charlotte Lock, Customer Director at JLP, highlighted the value of personalised service during the holiday rush, saying, “Whether making sure you're choosing the right headphones or wanting inspirational food ideas for entertaining, we know customers value the independent, trusted advice they get from our partners and that friendly, personal touch.” Lock expressed enthusiasm about the interest in the roles, adding, “Our partners have always been at the heart of what sets us apart. We’re thrilled by the interest the roles have already received and that people want to be part of the excitement that surrounds our two brands at Christmas.”
Growing Demand Fuels Recruitment Efforts
The increase in hiring is also driven by higher demand across JLP’s product range, with Waitrose reporting a 25% rise in its Christmas range sales compared to last year, and John Lewis experiencing a 20% boost in holiday decoration sales.
