Bradford is on track to see significant job growth and economic development as preparations continue for its year as UK City of Culture 2025. Culture Minister Sir Chris Bryant has announced an additional £5 million in funding, bringing the total economic support to £15 million.
The funding will help the Bradford Culture Company deliver an extensive programme of events throughout 2025, while supporting long-term cultural regeneration. As part of this, 6,500 new jobs are expected to be created across the district. Additionally, 6,000 training opportunities will be made available to nurture the next generation of creatives.
A key focus of the initiative is to provide employment and development opportunities for young people. More than 20 roles within the Bradford Culture Company will be dedicated to individuals under 25, facilitated through apprenticeships and the Young Creatives scheme. This programme aims to give local youth valuable experience working on a high-profile national event.
Investment in Key Venues and Infrastructure
The additional investment will support the development and refurbishment of key cultural venues. Funding will contribute to projects such as The Beacon, Bradford’s new touring venue, as well as enhancements to Bradford Theatres, including St George’s Hall, the Alhambra Theatre, and Kings Hall & Winter Garden. The National Science and Media Museum will also see the development of new spaces to host events.
Culture Minister Sir Chris Bryant highlighted the significance of the initiative, stating: “I cannot wait to experience the spectacular programme of cultural delights next year that will tell Bradford’s story to the world, showing off the district’s rich cultural heritage and diverse artistic talent, from the Brontë sisters and David Hockney to artist Deepa Mann-Kler’s interactive cookbook celebrating Bradford’s best recipes.
I am delighted to be able to announce this funding to help make Bradford’s dream a reality and ensure that everyone across the district has the opportunity to get involved in next year’s events, whatever their interests.”
Major Events and Economic Impact
Bradford 2025 will feature approximately 1,000 events, co-developed with local artists and creatives. These events are expected to attract an additional 3.3 million visitors, generating nearly £140 million in visitor spending throughout the year.
The broader cultural and economic activity could contribute to an additional £700 million of growth by 2030, enhancing Bradford’s position as a hub for the arts and culture.
Volunteer and Community Engagement
More than 3,000 volunteers are being recruited to support the delivery of events, fostering community pride and engagement. Volunteering opportunities will provide valuable experience for those interested in event management and the cultural sector.
Cultural Highlights of 2025
The programme will celebrate local talent and heritage. Highlights include:
- An opening event curated by magician Steven Frayne (Dynamo).
- A year-long drawing celebration supported by David Hockney.
- The annual Turner Prize hosted at Cartwright Hall.
- Marshmallow Laser Feast at the National Science and Media Museum.
- A reimagining of The Jungle Book by the Akram Khan company.
- Visual artworks inspired by Wuthering Heights on display in the moorlands.
- A residency with Opera North.
Dan Bates, Executive Director at Bradford 2025, emphasised the positive impact of the initiative: “By working together with DCMS, we are not only creating new opportunities but also equipping local people with the skills needed to thrive. This investment is helping to shape a brighter, more dynamic future for Bradford and beyond.”
Cllr Susan Hinchcliffe, Leader of Bradford Council, added: “This latest funding will help to ensure that beyond the great events, our UK City of Culture designation leads to more jobs and economic benefits which will be felt positively for our residents for years after 2025.”
The UK City of Culture programme offers Bradford a unique opportunity to drive economic growth, create new job prospects, and celebrate the district’s cultural richness. Job seekers, young people, and volunteers can look forward to a year of opportunity and development as Bradford prepares to take centre stage in 2025.
