Channel 4’s plans to expand its Bristol hub, as part of efforts to strengthen its presence outside London, have been hailed as “fantastic” for local job creation by West of England mayor Dan Norris. The broadcaster's initiative is expected to increase opportunities for skilled workers across the region.
The broadcaster’s £6 million ‘Accelerate’ initiative aims to nurture behind-the-scenes production talent, aligning with the West of England’s focus on growing local skills. Mayor Norris highlighted the significance of this move, saying it would help ensure the region remains a leader in creativity while offering more opportunities for local people.
“This is fantastic news for Bristol and the wider West of England,” said Norris. “Channel 4’s expansion and investment in skills will help to ensure that our region remains a leading place for creativity, offering more and more opportunities for local talented people.”
600 jobs to be created across the UK
As part of its regional strategy, Channel 4 plans to create 600 jobs nationwide. The broadcaster, which already has a base at Finzels Reach in Bristol, as well as offices in Leeds and Glasgow, is committed to hiring locally in the West Country.
“The commitment to recruiting locally will further cement Bristol’s place on the UK’s creative map,” Norris added.
Channel 4 expands despite challenges
Despite a challenging financial year, Channel 4 continues to push forward with its regional expansion strategy. The broadcaster recently reported a record loss due to a 9.7% drop in television advertising revenue, resulting in a total loss of £52 million in 2023. However, digital revenues grew by 10%, reaching £280 million.
Chief executive Alex Mahon commented: “In 2024, we have set out the next phase of Channel 4's growth with a robust and ambitious strategy for the future and have seen a stabilisation of the advertising market.”
