Footwear retailer Schuh has increased its workforce by nearly 400 employees, surpassing pre-pandemic employment levels. Headquartered in Scotland, the company now employs 4,369 people, up from 3,975 last year, reflecting a strong recovery in its latest financial period.
Schuh's recent hiring boost follows a drop in staffing during the pandemic, when employee numbers fell to 3,286 in early 2022. With robust business performance over the past year, Schuh’s revenue rose from £354.4 million to £380.8 million, according to filings with Companies House. Pre-tax profits also increased from £13.4 million to £21 million.
UK and European Sales Update
In the UK, sales climbed from £328.2 million to £356 million, while European revenue saw a slight decline, moving from £26.2 million to £24.7 million. The retailer reported a 3.8% rise in footfall alongside a 10% increase in e-commerce sales.
Future Plans Focused on Technology and Store Adaptations
To navigate challenging market conditions, Schuh plans to leverage technology and adapt its store portfolio. The board noted: “While the retail environment continues to pose difficult trading conditions, we will continue to review our store portfolio to ensure we are best placed to adapt to this changing environment.”
