A project led by Tonbridge and Malling Borough Council, in partnership with Oaks Specialist College, has successfully supported nine young people with disabilities into employment, volunteering, or internships. The scheme, which received a £30,000 grant from the council, has created opportunities for students across a range of industries.
Eighteen local businesses have participated in the initiative, providing placements in sectors such as healthcare, hospitality, and facilities management. This initiative, launched last year, aims to give young adults with learning disabilities the chance to gain independence and contribute to the workforce.
Support and Encouragement from Local Leaders
Robin Betts, the council’s cabinet member for regeneration, highlighted the importance of the project, stating, "Many of us take securing a job for granted and will never experience the everyday challenges that come with having a learning disability. These young people have shown that with the right support, they can make a valuable contribution to businesses and realise their potential."
Positive Impact for Young Adults with Disabilities
Jackie Thurtle, project lead at Oaks Specialist College, praised the scheme's impact: "This funding has enabled an inspiring and talented group of young adults to show the world what they are capable of and find their place in their communities."
Businesses that have contributed to the programme include American Golf, Feast, Demelza Hospice, Mitie, Summerhill School, and Tonbridge Angels FC.
Currently, only 5% of people with learning disabilities in the UK secure full-time employment, making this initiative a significant step in improving opportunities for young people in the area.
