San Francisco-based Prologis has announced a $635 million (£500m) investment in a new biomedical facility at the Cambridge Biomedical Campus, a move expected to create 2,120 skilled jobs and support advancements in research and diagnostics. This new facility will contribute significantly to the UK's life sciences sector and economy, with the Biomedical Campus already driving £4.2 billion in economic activity annually.
The Prologis-funded development, named 2000 Discovery Drive, will add a six-floor, 115,000-square-foot facility offering cutting-edge laboratory spaces, office areas, and infrastructure to support clinical trials and diagnostics. The roles created will span research, diagnostics, and support functions, providing high-skill job opportunities in the life sciences sector.
Further investment in community-focused infrastructure is also planned, including a semi-sunken CycleParc, a multi-storey car park, and enhanced public spaces. The campus will benefit from improved accessibility when the new Cambridge South railway station opens in summer 2025, which is expected to bolster recruitment for the companies based there.
Government and Industry Support for UK Innovation
The UK government’s recent International Investment Summit attracted £63 billion in foreign investment, with Prologis’s Cambridge initiative building on this momentum. Chancellor Rachel Reeves, who visited the site, welcomed the investment, citing it as “a vote of confidence in our plan for the UK economy.” She highlighted the government's focus on encouraging private investment to stimulate economic growth and job creation.
Paul Weston, Regional Head at Prologis UK, underscored the importance of private sector commitment to supporting long-term growth, saying, “The Government’s commitment to unlock Foreign Direct Investment matches our own focus on partnering with public and private stakeholders to invest and deliver the infrastructure needed for sustainable, long-term growth.”
Building a Hub for Global Healthcare Innovation
The Cambridge Biomedical Campus already hosts renowned institutions such as the Cambridge University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and global biopharma leader AstraZeneca. Science and Technology Secretary Peter Kyle noted that the Prologis development aligns with the government’s goals to drive economic growth through advances in science and technology, calling the project “another vote of confidence in the UK’s approach to long-term growth.”
This latest expansion marks another step in a longstanding public-private collaboration at the campus, which has become a critical hub for biomedical research.
