The Liverpool City Region is set to become a key player in the UK’s artificial intelligence (AI) sector, with 1,000 new jobs announced by US IT infrastructure company Kyndryl. The positions will be created over the next three years as part of the UK-wide AI Opportunities Action Plan, which includes a £14bn investment in the sector.

1,000 New Tech Jobs for Liverpool

Kyndryl, a multinational company specialising in designing, building, and managing large-scale IT systems, was spun out of IBM in 2021. While the exact location of the new hub has yet to be confirmed, Sci-Tech Daresbury in Halton is considered a strong contender.

Local Leaders Celebrate Investment

Metro Mayor Steve Rotheram hailed the announcement as a testament to the region’s ambition and ability to attract international investment.

“This is fantastic news for our region and a real testament to what we can achieve when local ambition is matched by national support,” said Mr Rotheram. “With 1,000 new AI jobs coming to the Liverpool City Region, we’re not just creating opportunities for today but laying the foundations for the jobs of the future.”

He added that the region, known for its history of innovation, is ready to embrace AI and digital technology to boost the economy, develop skills, and tackle inequality.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer, who announced the investment, echoed these sentiments, calling the jobs a sign of the government’s commitment to driving innovation and delivering tangible benefits for working people.

AI as a Catalyst for Change

The jobs announcement is part of the government’s broader AI Opportunities Action Plan, developed by AI advisor Matt Clifford, which includes 50 recommendations for harnessing the potential of AI in the UK.

Mr Starmer highlighted the transformative impact of AI on various sectors, from personalised education to improved infrastructure. He said: “AI will drive incredible change in our country... It has the potential to transform the lives of working people.”

Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves described the initiative as a modern industrial strategy in action, aimed at raising living standards and boosting the economy across the UK.

A Growing Tech Sector in the Liverpool City Region

The new AI hub builds on a series of recent announcements aimed at creating jobs and boosting the local economy. Last year, the government announced 2,000 jobs in the region through the HyNet hydrogen hub.

With Liverpool City Region emerging as a leader in AI innovation, the area looks set to play a crucial role in shaping the UK’s future tech landscape while providing significant opportunities for job seekers in the coming years.
