Topping the list are police officers, with 6,500 out of every 100,000 current or former officers reporting that their job had negatively impacted their mental health. This figure is 242% higher than the national average, with approximately 11,000 of the UK’s estimated 169,231 officers stating their roles have caused or exacerbated mental health issues. This equates to 6.5% of the total workforce in this role.

Social Workers and Welfare Professionals Rank High

Social workers take second place, with 6,100 per 100,000 reporting similar mental health struggles. Welfare and housing professionals follow closely, with 1.9% of workers in these roles – around 636,000 people across the UK – reporting job-related mental health concerns.

The research was based on data from the Health and Safety Executive (HSE), examining the prevalence of self-reported stress, depression, or anxiety linked to current or previous jobs.

A spokesperson for Claims.co.uk commented: "Factors such as long hours, high responsibilities, and public-facing roles appear to contribute significantly to an employee's mental health being negatively impacted."

Least Stressful Jobs Identified

On the other end of the spectrum, bookkeepers, payroll managers, and wage clerks were found to have the least stressful jobs in the UK.
