For students approaching the end of their university experience, securing a high-skilled job is often the next major step. According to a recent analysis by The Daily Mail, certain UK universities stand out for helping their graduates find such employment. The rankings are based on feedback from 382,000 graduates, surveyed 15 months after completing their studies, on whether they were in a high-skilled role and if they felt their career was progressing as expected.
High-skilled jobs are defined as positions in management, professional occupations, or associate professional roles – the types of careers many students aim for when enrolling at university.
The rankings show that science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) universities are particularly successful at securing top jobs for their graduates. Imperial College London leads the list, with 96.3% of its graduates entering high-skilled employment. The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) and St George’s, University of London, also rank highly.
While Russell Group universities feature prominently, it’s notable that the University of Bath, St George’s, and Loughborough University also make the top 10, despite not being part of the prestigious group.
Focus Beyond Oxbridge
Interestingly, traditional powerhouses like the University of Oxford and the University of Cambridge rank fourth and fifth, respectively, indicating that graduates from other institutions may have just as strong career prospects. The top spots are dominated by universities with strong links to industry, particularly in STEM fields.
Imperial College London Tops the List
Imperial College London stands out for both the high percentage of graduates in skilled employment and the salaries they earn. Graduates from Imperial report an average salary of £37,000 just 15 months after completing their studies, the highest among the ranked universities.
