A major boost to employment in northern Scotland is expected as SSEN Transmission, a subsidiary of SSE, rolls out its £20bn investment in grid infrastructure. This expansion, aimed at supporting the UK’s green energy goals, will create thousands of new jobs in the region, primarily in the Highlands, Outer Hebrides, Orkney, and Shetland.

Job creation linked to energy sector growth

SSEN Transmission's project will support the construction of new windfarms, both offshore and onshore, as part of the UK government’s efforts to decarbonise the electricity grid. The initiative will require a significant workforce, expected to peak at nearly 5,000 employees by 2027.

The demand for workers across various sectors – from construction to maintenance and energy production – is set to revitalise the local job market in these areas, many of which have been facing challenges with depopulation and economic stagnation.

Housing project to support workforce

To meet the housing needs of the growing workforce, SSEN Transmission has signed an agreement with local councils and housing associations to build over 1,000 new homes. This will ensure that those employed on the project have access to suitable accommodation. The initiative also includes refurbishing vacant homes and renovating derelict properties, offering a long-term housing solution even after the project concludes.

Rob McDonald, managing director of SSEN Transmission, said: “This is a significant and innovative contribution to addressing the housing challenges in the north of Scotland, and it also demonstrates how we can work in partnership to develop imaginative proposals that will deliver new homes.”

Opportunities for local residents

While many of the new roles will be filled by those relocating to the area, SSEN Transmission has indicated that local residents will also benefit from the job opportunities. With affordable housing being part of the plan, the project is expected to have a lasting impact on the region’s economy, offering stable employment and supporting long-term community development.

A model for future energy projects

The innovative approach taken by SSEN Transmission has been widely praised. RenewableUK, the industry body, described the partnership between the energy company and local councils as "unique and novel," showcasing how infrastructure developments can bring about both economic and social benefits for the communities they impact.

As the project progresses, it is set to become a model for other energy initiatives, combining job creation with community investment, and ensuring that the benefits of the green energy transition are felt across the country.
